Twingly News: BlogRank and Top 100
Today we’re launching two exciting projects at Twingly.com - Top 100 and BlogRank. The first one, Twingly Top 100, is the listing of the 100 biggest blogs in 12 different languages based on our ranking system (which is mainly focusing on inlinks and likes among other things). BlogRank is a number between 1-10 that shows how big a blog is. It’s similar to Google PageRank but only for blogs.
One of the most asked questions we get is “which are the biggest blogs in that language” and with Twingly Top 100, it’s now public. It’ll of course change over time but these are the top blogs right now in the 12 languages we have on Top 100:
- All languages: Techcrunch
- Danish: Slagt en hellig ko
- Dutch: Frankwatching
- English: Techcrunch
- Finnish: Valokuvatorstai
- French: Ma vie est tout à fait fascinante
- German: Basic Thinking Blog
- Greek: Preza TV
- Italian: Blog di Beppe Grillo
- Norwegian: NRKbeta
- Portuguese: Sedentário & Hiperativo
- Spanish: Microsiervos
- Swedish: Isabella Löwengrip
BlogRank could be found on your blog profile. It’s all public and if you would like to show it to your blog readers (it’s something that will gain you trust and show your influence) it’s easy to pick a badge on your blog profile to copy and paste in to your blog.
We would love feedback and thoughts on both Top 100 and BlogRank. Feel free to contact us or just comment below!

How come Blondinbella comes in at number 32 on the top 100 when she scores a perfect 10 in her blog rank? There are several blogs with 9 above her on the list.
And how come Blondinbella, again, comes in at 32 on the list when according to Google there is a total of 694 inbound links to that domain when Slashdot.org scores a massive 144.000?
Just curious.
Comment by Mingus Rude, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 at 13:10
@Mingus Rude: the BlogRank is based per language so the largest blogs in every language has BlogRank 10. We think it’s how the world is working: a Swedish blog want to be big in Sweden, not small international.
According the fact that Blondinbella.se is on the international list is because she’s actively pinging us and that she have a lot of attention from our part of the world. We have a European focus right now and therefore it is like this. We working on getting better data for the whole world.

@Anton - thanks for the quick feedback. I don’t mean to be negative but isn’t it pointless with the top100 if the ranking is calculated on different data sets for each entrant?
Also, I read your reply such that frequently pinging Twingly affects the rank. Then how ‘fairly’ does the ranking respond to the ‘biggest’-question that you refer to?

@Mingus Rude: no problem, we love feedback!
I don’t think it’s pointless. Technorati and Google is focused on US and therefore their search and toplists is not fair against the rest of the world. The same with us, we’re from Europe and therefore we have better data from this part of the world. Our hope is to be much, much better in the rest of the world too but we think it’s better to be clear with that everything is done by our point of view right now than hiding it. The biggest issue in the long run is probably Asia, Australia and Africa.
If a blog pinging us frequently it’s much easier for us to index every blog post from that blog. If another blog don’t ping us at all, it’s possible that we index it anyway but in that case we have some problem to index it frequently because we don’t get a notification (which a ping actually is) every time it’s updated.
The bloggers who ping us frequently is therefore better indexed by us.
Again, thanks. We think it’s great with feedback and questions. They’re really important, so please keep asking!

Twingly launched its own blog charts in twelve languages. Based on proprietary metrics, the BlogRank is supposed to be the equivalent to Google’s PageRank system - and finally, there is an alternative Technorati-like service.
